What does all of this do?

The exposed mechanism is part of the automatic movement. As you wear the watch, an internal rotor winds a spring that powers the hands; the mechanism can also be seen through the exhibition caseback. Unlike a battery-powered quartz watch, it needs movement or winding to keep running.
