Bulova Lunar Pilot Black Hole Limited Edition 98A335

The “Black Hole” name comes from the dial of this limited-edition Bulova Lunar Pilot. Its Musou-painted surface absorbs almost all visible light, making the gray hands and recessed chronograph counters appear to float above a remarkably deep black. Matte black case and bracelet surfaces surround the dial, while polished edges and pushers provide just enough contrast to define the shape.

The 41.2 mm case has sapphire crystal, luminous hands and markers, and a tachymeter scale. Bulova's high-frequency 262 kHz quartz movement powers a chronograph with a 60-minute counter and a 1/20-second counter for measuring elapsed time. The Lunar Pilot design draws on Bulova's spaceflight watch heritage, but this edition's unusually dark dial gives it a character of its own.

We'd want to see this dial in person. The appeal isn't another black watch: it's the way the near-lightless surface makes every hand, counter and polished edge stand out. A clever use of material on an already distinctive chronograph.
