Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Mechanical Chronograph Limited Edition SRQ045

This limited-edition Speedtimer connects Seiko's chronograph history to a serious mechanical stopwatch. Seiko developed precision chronographs for international sporting competitions in 1964 and introduced an early automatic chronograph in 1969. Here, the matte-black dial, red timing accents and tachymeter ring put the emphasis back on measuring elapsed time.

The automatic 8R46 movement uses a column wheel and vertical clutch for chronograph operation, measuring up to 30 minutes in one-eighth-second increments. You can see the 34-jewel movement through the caseback; it also supports hand winding and offers approximately 45 hours of power reserve. The black-coated steel case has specially shaped pushers, dual-curved sapphire crystal and a black calf-leather strap with protected interior stitching. Water resistance is 100 meters. Only 600 individually numbered pieces were made, with a collector's box.

Our Take

We like that the mechanical movement is part of the story here, not just something hidden under a racing-style dial. The column-wheel chronograph and restrained black-and-red design make this an interesting choice for someone who enjoys the machinery behind a stopwatch.
