The GA-2100 takes the unmistakable toughness of a G-SHOCK and puts it in a remarkably slim case. The camouflage GA-2100CM-5A adds a detail that rewards a second look.

A G-SHOCK has never needed to be discreet. Its protective case, prominent buttons and unmistakable lettering announce what it is before you get close enough to read the time. That visual confidence is part of the appeal.

The GA-2100 does something more interesting than simply shrink the familiar formula. Its broad, octagonal bezel keeps the watch recognizable, but the case sits just 11.8 mm thick. The result has the presence of a G-SHOCK without the towering profile people often expect from one.

Then there is the GA-2100CM-5A. Its beige, gray and green camouflage runs from the bezel onto the strap, interrupted by a dark analog-digital dial. Some areas of the pattern have a metallic sheen. Look more closely and you will find something else hiding among the shapes: the G-SHOCK “G,” worked into the camouflage itself.

It is the sort of detail that makes a watch more interesting the longer you look at it.

The octagon has a history

The GA-2100 is frequently called the “CasiOak,” a nickname inspired by the resemblance between its octagonal bezel and a famous luxury-watch design. It is a memorable nickname, but it leaves out a more compelling piece of the story.

Casio’s own design history reaches back to the original square DW-5000C of 1983. The GA-2100 reinterprets that early G-SHOCK identity in a case that accommodates analog hands as well as a digital display. Its bezel feels familiar because the design has roots in G-SHOCK’s own past.

The dial makes the connection work. Raised hour markers and substantial hands give the watch an immediately readable analog face, while the digital window handles the additional functions. The two displays have separate jobs, and neither needs to occupy the entire dial.

Slim does not mean delicate

The GA-2100CM-5A measures 48.5 mm from top to bottom and 45.4 mm across, yet weighs only 51 grams. Its Carbon Core Guard construction uses a carbon-reinforced structure to protect the module, helping Casio keep the case relatively thin and light. The watch retains G-SHOCK shock resistance and a 200-meter water-resistance rating.

Those figures explain why the GA-2100 feels like a different proposition from a large, heavy sports watch. It has a broad dial and a defined bezel, but its weight and thickness tell another story.

The case and strap of the camouflage model also use bio-based resin. That material choice belongs to the watch’s construction, not just its appearance: the patterned surfaces are part of the lightweight case-and-strap combination.

The camouflage has more going on than color

Camouflage usually aims to make something disappear. Here, it does the opposite.

The GA-2100CM-5A’s sand-toned pattern draws attention to the watch’s octagonal outline, then carries across the strap to make the entire piece feel deliberately designed. Metallic printing adds variation within the pattern, while the concealed G marks give it a detail you might miss at first glance.

The black dial provides a useful visual break from all that texture. Beige hands stand out against it, and the analog display gives the eye a clear place to settle. The watch has plenty of personality, but the dial does not have to compete with every shape on the case and strap.

That distinction matters when choosing a GA-2100. The darkest versions of the design can make time-reading harder in certain lighting. A review of the blacked-out GA-2100-1A1, for example, found its low-contrast hands and negative digital display difficult to read at times. That finding concerns the 1A1, not the camouflage CM-5A, but it illustrates why dial contrast deserves as much attention as case color when comparing references.

More than an analog dial

The GA-2100CM-5A has the everyday functions expected of a digital G-SHOCK, even though its analog hands take center stage. It offers world time across 48 cities, a 1/100-second stopwatch, a countdown timer, five daily alarms and an automatic calendar. A double LED system illuminates both the dial and digital display.

There is a particularly thoughtful feature tucked into that arrangement: hand shift. When the hands obstruct information on the digital display, the watch can move them temporarily out of the way. It is a small solution to a problem created by combining two ways of showing information on one dial.

Casio specifies approximately three years of battery life on two SR726W batteries. This is a conventional battery-powered GA-2100, not a solar-charging or phone-connected model.

The one to look at twice

The GA-2100’s appeal starts with its proportions: a recognizably rugged G-SHOCK reduced to an 11.8 mm profile. The GA-2100CM-5A builds on that achievement with a camouflage treatment that has its own design story, from the metallic accents to the G marks concealed in the pattern.

It is not trying to disappear beneath a cuff or imitate a traditional dress watch. It is a G-SHOCK with a lighter silhouette and a finish worth looking at twice.
